Meet Your Guide: Jan Gold

During your exploration of the captivating Outer Hebrides, you will be accompanied by Jan Gold, an experienced STGA (Scottish Tour Guide Association) Green Badge Guide since 2019, and a valued member of the Western Isles Tour Guide Association.


Jan has called Lewis home since 1978 and has dedicated herself to sharing the breathtaking landscapes, ancient historical sites, and vibrant cultural heritage of the Outer Hebrides with visitors from across the globe. After retiring from teaching in 2010, Jan pursued her passion for history in greater depth, honing her expertise to become an exceptional tour guide.


Passionate about her island home, Jan embraces every opportunity to provide guests with an insider’s perspective on what makes the Hebrides so special. Her warmth and knowledge promise an enriching journey filled with memorable experiences. We hope Jan’s involvement in this tour will inspire a deeper appreciation for the Outer Hebrides—its fascinating history, vibrant culture, and remarkable landscapes.


Jan will be joining the tour on Saturday and travelling with the group on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday.

THURSDAY (DAY 1) – Travel To Dunkeld - Your Hebridean Odyssey begins with a journey from your local departure point to the splendid 4* Dunkeld House Hotel - a distinguished Crerar property nestled within 280 acres of pristine woodland. FRIDAY (DAY 2)  Dunkeld To Stornoway - After a leisurely breakfast, continue your journey north through Scotland’s dramatic landscapes. Your travels lead you to the refined 4-star Macdonald Drumossie Hotel on the outskirts of Inverness, where an included two-course lunch awaits, offering a culinary interlude amid your travels.


The adventure presses on as you reach Ullapool, from where you board an enchanting evening ferry to Stornoway. Onboard, we enjoy an included meal as we journey to Stornoway.

Traverse the island’s northern reaches, where rolling moorlands and rugged landscapes create a mesmerizing backdrop. Along the way, enjoy carefully timed stops for coffee and lunch, and explore captivating highlights including Carloway Mill, the ancient Callanish standing stones, and an authentic thatched “Blackhouses” Museum (admission included). As you continue through Uig, The Butt of Lewis, Port of Ness, and Doune Carloway Broch, the rich history and natural beauty of the Hebrides unfold before you.

SUNDAY - Free Day in Stornoway - Start your day with a leisurely breakfast before enjoying a free day in and around Stornoway. After several travel-filled days (and with a legal day off for the crew), this day is all about relaxation and personal exploration. Wander the historic grounds of Lews Castle—perhaps a gentle stroll through the estate or a refreshing pause in the castle café will inspire you.

MONDAY (DAY 5) - Tour of the Isle of Harris - We set forth after breakfast on a tour that deepens your discovery of island culture as you explore the Isle of Harris with our expert guide. Your journey begins at Horgabost Beach, where serene coastal vistas welcome you, then moves on to St. Clement’s Church in Tarbert, the renowned home of Harris Tweed production. We stop next at the Isle of Harris Distillery to sample local spirits that capture the island’s essence.


We include a fascinating visit to “Hebrides People” at Northton  - a genealogy centre and museum bursting with insightful displays - provides a window into the region’s storied heritage. Later, we return to your hotel for dinner and your final night on the Isle of Lewis before tomorrow’s onward journey.

TUESDAY (DAY 6) – Travel To Benbecula - After breakfast, we bid farewell to Stornoway and the elegant Cabarfeidh Hotel with excited anticipation for what lies ahead. We welcome our knowledgeable guide once again, who will accompany us for the next three days, as we journey south through the captivating landscapes of Lewis and Harris.


This afternoon, we board a ferry from Leverburgh to Bernaray, allowing you to absorb the maritime beauty and refreshing seaside ambience. Upon arrival, we drive to the Isle of Benbecula, where the welcoming 3-star Dark Isle Hotel awaits. Serving as your base for the next two nights, this charming hotel boasts a restful lounge bar and a dining room that highlights tasty local produce. Each room is thoughtfully designed with an ensuite bathroom, TV, and courtesy tea trays to ensure your ultimate comfort.

WEDNESDAY (DAY 7) – Touring Uist, Eriskay & Barra - After a hearty breakfast, we set out with your expert guide for a full-day exploration of three of the Hebrides' most evocative islands. Your journey begins on South Uist, where the rugged beauty and rich cultural heritage of the island unfurl before your eyes. From there, we venture to the storied Isle of Eriskay  - the very place where the stricken S.S. Politician ran aground in 1941, an event that inspired the classic tale Whisky Galore. At the iconic Politician Pub, established in 1988, you’ll discover salvaged artefacts from the vessel, each piece a tangible reminder of the island’s dramatic past.


The tour continues with a visit to St Michael’s Church, where the echoes of ancient traditions offer a glimpse into the island’s spiritual legacy. Later, travel by ferry to the alluring Island of Barra - renowned as the most southerly inhabited island. Barra captivates with its stunning blend of pristine beaches, gentle hills, and expansive machair, embodying the unspoiled charm of the Hebrides. Enjoy a leisurely stop in the seaside town of Castlebay, where the pace of island life invites you to unwind and soak in the coastal ambiance.


As the afternoon wanes, you’ll retrace your steps back to Benbecula, returning to the welcoming Dark Isle Hotel. Savour a delightful dinner in the hotel restaurant as you reflect on the day’s discoveries during your final night on Benbecula before tomorrow’s journey south.

THURSDAY (DAY 8) -  Benbecula To Oban - After a delightful breakfast, we say farewell to our guide, as we journey south to Lochboisdale on South Uist. En-route, we make a culturally enriching stop at the Kildonan Centre -  a cherished heritage hub featuring a museum and craft shop that celebrate the local traditions of the Outer Hebrides.

Upon arrival at Lochboisdale, we board the afternoon sailing to Mallaig as you bid farewell to the magic of the Outer Hebrides. On arrival In Mallaig, our adventure continues southwards through the dramatic landscapes of Glencoe until we reach Oban. Here, you'll settle into the luxurious 4-star Oban Bay Hotel & Spa, your tranquil base for the next two nights.


This evening, savour a delightful dinner in the hotel restaurant, rounding off a travel-filled day with a taste of coastal charm. Included Meals - Breakfast & Dinner


FRIDAY (DAY 9) - Free Day In Oban - After a leisurely breakfast, enjoy a full day at your own pace in the charming seaside town of Oban, famously known as the "Gateway to the Isles." Nestled on Scotland’s rugged west coast and meaning "little bay," Oban offers a spectacular blend of dramatic shores, inviting countryside, and a compact town atmosphere perfect for exploration.


Stroll easily on foot through the town, where you can browse quaint galleries and independent shops, explore a local distillery and chocolate shop, or visit the museum to delve into the area's rich heritage. Meander along the seafront to the evocative ruins of Dunollie Castle and the sandy beaches beyond, where phenomenal sunsets serve as nature’s grand finale. Alternatively, you might choose to indulge in a soothing spa treatment at the Oban Bay Hotel & Spa, offering the ultimate relaxation experience.

SATURDAY (DAY 10) - Oban to Home (Via Loch Lomond) - After one final hearty Scottish breakfast, it's time to bid a fond farewell to the luxurious Oban Bay Hotel & Spa, marking the end of your unforgettable Hebridean Odyssey. But the journey isn’t over just yet! This morning, we set off to the scenic shores of Loch Lomond for an included farewell cruise, where you'll savour a warm cup of coffee/tea paired with traditional shortbread, all while soaking in the serene beauty of the loch.


With memories of breath-taking landscapes, rich history, and genuine Scottish hospitality still fresh in your mind, you'll then begin your journey home.
